Championing Sustainable Building Practices

by Allison / Tuesday, 07 July 2020 / Published in Facilities Management

Here at Sensus Building Group we are firm believers in championing sustainable building practices and minimising our environmental footprint.

How do you renovate a floating pontoon while simultaneously ensuring debris stays clear of the natural environment? This was the challenge before Sensus Project Manager, Michael Taylor, and his team when they started works on the over-the-water Warner Lake Pontoon.

“Before construction even began, we knew maintaining the integrity of the lake would be of the upmost importance,” says Michael. “Put simply, it’s our duty of care to minimise our environmental footprint.”

Our team of in-house construction experts proposed innovation solutions to safely transform the space.

“A core element of the work included sanding the pontoon’s decking platform that had seen wear and tear over the years,” says Michael.

“To prevent any residues escaping the site we inserted able rods, polyurethane rods, in between the deck treads so product or dust couldn’t fall through the deck timbers.”

“Our team then went a step further, wrapping plastic sheets underneath and up the sides encasing and sealing off the structure. We utilized dust extractors to stop dust from being generated and if any dust did escape – it was captured in the enclosed environment.”

The team also secured a power generator to provide a safe source of electricity for the site.

Back on dry land the site’s concrete walkway had seen better days and was up for demolition. Instead of just removing it, the team poured new concrete and then adhered it to a checker plate ramp.

“To help the pontoon entrance withstand wear and tear we concreted the area and then adhered a disability compliant checker plate ramp,” says Michael. “By reinforcing the ramp with concrete, it should withstand the elements for years to come.”

The renovated pontoon now sits serenely ready for patrons to view the picturesque Warner Lake. For the Sensus Team it’s all about delivering an excellent product that exceeds expectations, every time.
